The story of the wine
The Rhine grape par excellence! Everyone agrees that the Rhine valley is its cradle. Some believe it is the Argitis minor of the Romans and that its cultivation dates back to Roman times. According to Stoltz, Riesling was introduced to the vineyards of the Rheingau in the 9th century. In 843, after the division of Charlemagne's empire, Louis the German had “gentil aromatique” planted along the Rhine. The grape soon took the name Riesling, thought to come from “rieseln” (German for to trickle), because before it adapted to Alsace it was prone to coulure (in poor weather, such as rain during flowering, the flowers drop and no grapes form). Different from its German cousin, Alsace Riesling was established in the region by the end of the 15th century. It is often mentioned in the following century, but its cultivation only really grew in the second half of the 19th century. After the 1960s it became the most widely planted grape in Alsace.
